Academy Award-Winning Director Bill Guttentag will Direct a New Independent Documentary that Shines a Light on BIPOLAR DISORDER

Film features authentic footage shot over 13 years, showing the progression of the disorder and the impact of undiagnosed mental illness. Jennifer Hutchins to produce. Kickstarter campaign recently launched.

AUSTIN, TEXAS (September 29, 2020) Academy Award winning director Bill Guttentag and award-winning producer Jennifer Hutchins have joined with Randall White to create a film that will shine a bright light on bipolar disorder and on the perils of undiagnosed mental illness.

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood changes, from emotional highs to deeply depressive lows. Bipolar disorder affects approximately 14 million Americans, and 82.9% of those affected with bipolar disorder have "serious impairment." The film aims to foster and stimulate dialogue about undiagnosed mental illnesses, how they impact families, and why they are difficult to recognize and treat. The story unfolds through a desperate husband’s actual raw home videos as he attempts to save his family during his wife’s transformation from loving mother to destructive stranger. Through video footage that is stark at times, the audience views the actual process of a woman (Michelle) suffering from an undiagnosed mental illness. "Viewers will see it right there on the screen," says producer Hutchins. "Documentary filmmakers always tell a story, but this is a rare opportunity to show that story, as it actually occurred." The footage was shot by Randall White, Michelle's husband, and it is alternatively sensitive and shocking.  “I originally began to document my family for my own self-sanity when Michelle's illness first began to manifest in our lives," says Randall. "Michelle graduated Magna Cum Laude from OHSU as a nurse, she seemed normal. As time progressed, I learned our struggle as a couple, and later as a family, was far from unique. Millions of people are impacted by bipolar disorder. I hope our story is relatable from the raw physical truths accompanying the many wild moments that come with the disorder. I'm glad Bill (Oscar-winning director Bill Guttentag) and Jennifer (producer Jennifer Hutchins) agreed to make this film primarily through the images and keep it independent and real." To keep the film independent during production, the filmmakers launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter which was selected by Kickstarter as a rare "Project We Love."
